Canadian National Railroad Railroad
Two Harbors owes its very existence to the railroad and
iron ore industry. The first shipment of iron ore
was in 1884. Shipments of iron ore grew to 307, 949
tons by 1886. By 1913, Two Harbors was shipping up
to 10 million tons of ore with a peak in 1945 of over
19 million tons. As WWI approached, the railroad had
111 locomotives and 6,600 cars.
During WWII, many area women replaced the men that had
been called to military service. Today, the iron ore
trains still run, as well as passenger trains from Duluth
to Two Harbors, including special runs by the "Steam
Train."
